Webinar: DACA’s Precarious Future: A Conversation with Legal Experts and Advocates
On Wednesday, June 8, 2022, the Presidents’ Alliance, along with our partners, hosted DACA’s Precarious Future: A Conversation with Legal Experts and Advocates. This briefing discussed DACA’s future as it moves through the Federal Court system.
Legal experts discussed the current status of different court cases and why DACA’s future is so precarious despite this administration’s efforts to fortify DACA. Speakers laid out the legislative path ahead to build on DACA’s successes and press for bipartisan Dream legislation. This briefing shared useful resources and advocacy opportunities around the anniversary of DACA on June 15th.
DACA’s 10th Anniversary
Nearly ten years ago, on June 15, 2012, the sustained advocacy and courageous storytelling of undocumented students won a transformative victory when the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program was announced. More than 800,000 individuals have since relied on the work permits, deportation protections, and other opportunities afforded by DACA to pursue their career and educational goals including many on your respective campuses. In the process, these DACA recipients have demonstrated why expanding opportunities for immigrants is so important – both to their own lives and to the future of this country.
University of North Texas Amicus Brief
The Presidents’ Alliance has submitted an amicus brief in support of the University of North Texas (UNT) in the appeals case in the Fifth Circuit of Young Conservatives of Texas Foundation v. Smatresk, et. al. In this case, UNT was sued for charging out-of-state U.S. citizens more than in-state undocumented students.
Texas state law extends in-state tuition eligibility to undocumented students if they meet a number of requirements, including graduating from a Texas high school (or equivalent). The federal district court ruled against UNT, finding that the Texas law setting higher out-of-state tuition for U.S. citizens is preempted by federal law.
