College and University Leaders Commend Senate Hearing, Urge Bipartisan Resolution on Dreamers

Washington, D.C.The Presidents’ Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration, an alliance of over 550 college and university leaders, commends the Senate Judiciary Committee’s efforts to address the urgency of providing permanent protections for Dreamers.

Today’s hearing takes place amidst ongoing legal challenges to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and in a moment where Dreamers are being excluded from bipartisan efforts to reach a compromise on immigration, despite broad support for a legislative solution. As thousands of Dreamers graduate from colleges and universities across the country, this hearing represents a critical moment in which Dreamers’ contributions are once again being recognized and elevated into the national conversation.

According to Miriam Feldblum, Executive Director of the Presidents’ Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration, the hearing is an important moment to consider the important role DACA recipients and Dreamers play in a time of impending labor shortages and severe inflation. “Dreamers contribute their talents, skills, and dedication throughout all sectors of our country. Dreamers are more than students: they are alumni, faculty, staff, and dedicated community members. The urgency to provide all Dreamers a roadmap to citizenship and permanent integration into the fabric of our nation cannot be understated.”

DACA has been one of the most successful immigration initiatives in modern history. With access to permanent protections, Dreamers with and without DACA will be able to continue playing a key role in fueling economic growth, meeting workforce demands, and nurturing talent development across various sectors.

This hearing is a long-overdue bipartisan conversation to find a legislative solution for Dreamers, their employers, and their families. We thank the Senate Judiciary Committee for their efforts and now, more than ever, we urge Congress to act swiftly and prioritize permanent protections for Dreamers without waiting for the DACA case to reach the Supreme Court.

The nonpartisan, nonprofit Presidents’ Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration brings college and university presidents and chancellors together on the immigration issues that impact higher education, our students, campuses, communities and nation. We work to support undocumented, international and refugee students, and advance forward-looking immigration policies and practices at the federal level, in our states, and across our college campuses. The Alliance is composed of 550+ college and university presidents and chancellors of public and private colleges and universities, enrolling over five million students in 43 states, D.C., and Puerto Rico.
