Washington, D.C.—Over the last few weeks, our nation witnessed the unjust murders of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Tony McDade. In remembrance of each of their lives and of the longstanding and institutionalized racial injustices and inequalities in the United States, the Presidents’ Alliance stands in solidarity with Black communities in demanding fundamental change and justice. Black American, immigrant, and international communities in higher education and beyond experience racialized injustice daily and bear the brunt of systemic racism and violence. Our nation will not advance without true justice for all and our explicit affirmation that Black Lives Matter.
As an Alliance dedicated to the pursuit of just and fair immigration policy, we also recommit ourselves to identifying, reflecting, uplifting, and taking action on the intersections of race, immigration, and higher education. In support of this commitment, we pledge to: (1) elevate the narratives of black undocumented and DACAmented immigrants in our advocacy and empower them to help shape our policy priorities; (2) re-double our efforts to recruit presidents and chancellors from HBCU’s into our membership, and African American presidents and chancellors onto the steering committee; and (3) engage in an ongoing conversation with Black-led immigration and higher education organizations to identify additional mechanisms of support.
